Upcoming EVs Should Make Noise For Safety Purposes

As we all know electric vehicles are the future. Many automakers around the world have started testing prototypes and initiated manufacturing of electric cars and bikes. Moreover, the government is also helping these companies to establish a good EV business. Not only in India but also foreign countries are putting their effort to make earth pollution free. A new report by the BBC said that the EU has recently passed a new rule which states that electric cars should feature some noise-producing devices. The new rule by the EU will come into action from Monday. The main reason said by EU for implementing this rule is that the Electric vehicles are too silent by which the pedestrian life will be at great risk because they can't hear a vehicle approaching. That's why all the electric four-wheelers will equip a noise emitting device which will sound like a conventional engine. Moreover, the EVs must have an acoustic vehicle alert system (Avas) which will sound when reversing the vehicle or travelling below 19 kmph speed limit.

 The main reason said by EU for implementing this rule is that the Electric vehicles are too silent by which the pedestrian life will be at great risk because they can't hear a vehicle approaching.

EU says that the cars are very close to the pedestrians when a driver is backing up the vehicle or moving slowly, albeit a driver can easily switch off the device if he thinks it's necessary. A charity named as Guide Dogs has raised this issue by saying that it’s quite hard to hear a low-emission approaching. The charity people have praised this decision and said the EVs should produce sound at all speeds. Michael Ellis, Road Minister says that "the government wanted the benefits of green transport to be felt by everyone and understood the concerns of the visually impaired."

The EVs must have an acoustic vehicle alert system (Avas) which will sound when reversing the vehicle or travelling below 19 kmph speed limit.

"This new requirement will give pedestrians added confidence when crossing the road," he added. For the year 2021, every new electric vehicle will have come equipped with Avas system. Moreover, the European government has also announced that they have plans to ban new petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2040. Moreover, the Indian automaker Tata has also declared that the company will discontinue the diesel engines in their entry-level cars like Tiago and Tigor.
